Off Road Bikes Are Here To Stay

By Robert Velasquez

Off road or on road bikes are providing a more economical and fun way for people to enjoy leisure time or transportation. Rising gas prices have made it necessary for many to find different methods of doing both than they have relied on in the past. With electric and small gas engines providing the power, these vehicles are much cheaper to run.

Both young and older people have long found biking to be exciting and enjoyable. Dirt track riding and highway touring both require the rider to possess daring and skill.

Wilderness trails and dirt tracks require a different type of vehicle than highway riding. Because many dirt riders begin at a very young age, most companies manufacture vehicles just for kids. Once thought a great sport for fathers and sons, dirt riding is also practiced by mothers and daughters. Often the entire family will become involved. It is an activity all members can enjoy together.

For the more competitive spirit, there is organized racing. The popularity of auto racing has fallen as fuel prices have climbed. Since they use a great deal less fuel, these vehicles can be raced at much less cost. The excitement of speed and competition remains. There are many professional racers, and several categories of racing. Sponsors for the talented racer abound.

Manufacturers have come a long way in making these vehicles attractive to the consumer for transportation. From small electrical powered mopeds to larger vehicles with gas engines, they can be seen on streets and highways. While the smaller ones are not acceptable for open road use, the larger ones are comfortable and will run at highway speeds.

Dirt track riders and open road enthusiasts can find many folks who share their passion. Clubs abound in almost every location. Many have made their love of riding the basis for a type of sub culture. Riding dirt trails on the weekend or long road trips, it is generally easy to find someone to share the experience.

Safety is an obvious concern for many people. An abundant supply of safety gear such as helmets and thickly padded clothing are available. Classes to teach safe riding practices are also given by many organizations and some dealers. With training and the use of proper gear, the risk of injury is greatly reduced.

The rise of popularity of biking in the past years is evident. Globally there are more bikes than automobiles being used. Whether off road or on road biking is preferred, it is evident that biking will be around for a very long time.
