The process of using a barrier or drainage system to control oil spills, chemical spills, sewage waste and other kind of spills caused by other agents is referred to as spill containment. It is a more advanced method compared to the method of absorbing the agents on the surface using absorption kits. National Response Center reports indicate that there are over 10,000 spills from facilities in the US every year.
Due to this high number there has been a need for a good method of containing the disasters to control the effects to the environment. One method that has come up is use of an inflatable stopper referred to as a pneumatic bladder. The bladder is inserted in the drainage system where there is an outflow to form a containment vessel. Whenever there is a spill the stopper is inflated to block the drainage system. This prevents the agent from spilling on the ground water in the ocean or river.
One major advantage of the spills containment is that it is very Eco-friendly unlike the method of using the absorbing kits which have a very low capacity. The absorbing kits also have to be disposed because they are not made to be recycled and this makes the whole process slow and expensive.
Chemical handling and oil companies have taken precautions to deploy bladders and valves that can be inserted into drainage barriers in minimal time after spillage.
According to new technology reports the process of inflating the inflatable stopper can be controlled remotely. This is important to avoid contact with some of the lethal chemicals. The process is also made pneumatic to avoid having electrical cables in the area.
Latest technology has come up with a wireless network which uses disposable gas cylinders to inflate the bladders. The wireless network is referred to as a ZigBee and it allows different components to be connected such as fire alarms, sensors and panic buttons. Read more about: spill containment
