When visiting the Dominican Republic - or, the "DR" - you're likely going to meet many of your tropical vacation wants and wishes, to be sure. If, however unlikely it may seem, you actually feel like what you're experiencing somehow isn't enough - that there must be more to see and do - then you may want to make your way to a lesser known, but just as desirable location in the DR: Saona Island.
Located just off the mainland at the southeastern tip of the Dominican Republic, Saona Island is a protected nature reserve that is part of what comprises East National Park. It is visited by thousands of tourists each year, and whether by boat or catamaran, they all make the journey to Saona. There, they experience some of the most natural and beautiful beaches and scenery anywhere in the world. Chances are you may have seen some of the beaches in television or film and simply not realized it - film makers and advertising companies regularly film here when the proto-typical "beautiful beach" scenery is required. In fact, the island is promoted to European travelers as the location of the famous Bounty candy bar adverts.
The island was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1494 in what was his second voyage to the Americas. The name was meant as a show of honor toward Columbus' friend Michele da Cuneo from Savona, Italy, who was the first governor of the island. There is only a small contingent of settlers who actually live on the island, all others who go there are visitors.
The waters surrounding the island are host to exotic and colorful aqua life. The sandbars of the island extend offshore and allow a closer look at some of the fish and birds, as the depth of the water is shallow enough for good visibility. Many tour groups disperse into the shallow waters to walk amongst the starfish and snorkel. It is possible to charter a private boat from Bayahibe, but if you do decide to go this route instead of one of the more established Tour charters be sure to ask questions about how many stops there will be as well as the general nature of your "tour" - some private charters are for people looking to explore, some are for people who want to snorkel and still others are commissioned by individuals who simply wish to party with a beautiful backdrop behind them.
Saona Island is regarded as one of the most beautiful locations on the entire planet, if you find yourself in the Dominican Republic for any length of time or purpose, don't waste your opportunity to experience a small portion of paradise.
