By Tyler C. Pulido

Although mixed martial arts fight shorts may look like beach shorts, they are anything but. Since the shorts that MMA fighters wear are pulled at, grounded upon, beat and bended, bunched and twisted they need to be much more than what they appear to be.

First off, a good portion of a mixed martial arts match takes place on the ground where MMA fight shorts are ground into and dragged across the surface of the training mats or octagons. Of course, shorts cannot handle this grinding and dragging without being made of specialized tough materials that possess higher than normal thread counts. Besides the grinding that they are put through, fighting shorts are also regularly pulled and stretched in every which way. The reason that MMA shorts are able to withstand this pulling without ripping is because they are constructed out of poly-directional fabrics that are able to be pulled in poly-directional ways. Additionally, the materials need to return to their original shape once the stretching has stopped.

However, it is not merely the fabric of the MMA fight shorts that is special and strong, also the seams and stitching are specialized to withstand the rigors of the fight game. The type of stitching keeping the seams together is the key to having long-lasting seams. The thread used in the stitching can't be ordinary thread, nor can it be stitched in just a simple, non-repetitive pattern. If you are a fighter, you understand that your MMA fighting shorts need to be more than just durable, they also need to be able to stay in place on you while you are moving around in them.

After a shopper has found MMA fight shorts that will last, stay in place and move as he or she moves, the next thing to look for are the secondary traits. These traits, though second tier, are still awfully nice things to have in your fighting shorts. You also need shop for shorts that do not stain or pick up odors or mildew. Mixed martial arts is a sweat-filled, dirty and bloody game and your shorts need to be able to thrive within this environment as well as you do. And, with you most likely keeping your shorts in a bag after your fights and workouts, you need shorts that will resist mildew.

There are many points that a wise MMA fighter needs to search for as they are searching for the proper pair of fighting shorts to train and fight in.
