The World of Online Casinos

By James Littleton

Online casinos offer many of the same game versions as traditional casinos. They are regulated and must adhere to similar standards. They may not be as exciting as experiencing the real casino atmosphere, but they do often provide some social interaction (via chat, forums, etc.) and may foster a sense of community. And just as any type of gambling can become problematic, these sites can be very addictive. In fact, in the last few years, they have greatly contributed to the incidence of gambling-related obsessions, so if your loved one is spending an excessive amount of time gambling online, it should not be taken lightly.

Online casinos can be advantageous to real casinos. For example, they tend to exemplify true randomness - that is, the electronic generation of numbers, cards, etc. is perfectly programmed. In face-to-face games, many outside variables can affect the outcome of the game - such as well-worn roulette wheels that can alter the ball trajectory and final result. Dealer or player cheating is extremely rare in online casinos, although there have been a few who have been caught using cheating software or refusing to pay. Furthermore, it is desirable for those who are elderly, handicapped, or find it otherwise difficult to travel to a real casino. Some say it's easier to keep track of wins and losses. You also will not have to fight for a seat at a table or slot during the busy weekends.

That said, it's true that traditional casinos have benefits that online casinos do not. The lights, the ambiance, the party atmosphere - they are all aspects of the casino world that players have come to love and revel in. Food and drink are readily available, as are other types of entertainment, such as comedians and concerts. In high-rolling casinos such as those in Atlantic City, bystanders can watch as wealthy players win and lose significant amounts of cash. In addition to online casinos, there are "live gaming" sites that use a studio and a dealer to more closely simulate the casino experience.

Online casinos are utilized in one of two ways - they are either web-based, or downloaded. Each method has its advantages and disadvantages. In the web-based version, you will certainly need a significant amount of bandwidth. If that is not a problem, you may still have to deal with fluctuations in the site and Internet traffic. Downloaded software typically runs faster because it uses your computer's processor; however, you run the risk of downloading spyware or adware that may be attached to the program.

Over the last couple of decades, and particularly in the last 10 years, online casinos have skyrocketed in popularity. For people who don't reside near a traditional casino, or who live in a region where casinos are not permitted, they will greatly enjoy the ability to play at home. Most actually play for entertainment (as opposed to money) and might even play while having friends over. Others will use the sites to practice and hone their skills before visiting the real casinos. Finally, if you check out the live chat rooms or forums on some of the more popular online casino sites, you'll find vibrant communities of players who will be happy to provide you their expert opinions and strategies on all games that the online casinos offer. Online casinos provide an amazing experience, right from home, and it's difficult to fathom living in an online world where they didn't exist.
