Hayward Chlorinator Types And Features

By Maximilian Birkensson

A Hayward chlorinator can be classified as either an offline or in-line feeder. It integrates easily into the filtration and pumping system for a pool or spa. The use of chlorinators is a safe and efficient method to maintain the bromine and/or chlorine sanitizer level in the water.

Chlorine tablets floating around in pool skimmers and manual testing for pH levels is a thing of the past. These days, all this is taken care of by automated chlorinators and brominators. They are hooked up into the pool's pumping system, after the filter but before the inlet into the pool.

At the other end, the pool's outlet is fed into the filter and then to the feeder. There are many types of feeders designed to match different types of pumping systems for various pool and spa designs. If it is an automatic feeder, it will be able to test for chlorine and pH levels and dispense pure chlorine as and when required.

The offline design works as a parallel piping system between the filter and pool inlet. Two holes are cut into the tube that goes into the pool. The chemical feeder's inlet and outlet tubes are attached to these holes. The water can now pass directly from the filter to the pool inlet as well as through the feeder.

There are a few things that pool owners and spa management should take note of. First, always use chlorine tablets (tabs) or sticks. Granular chlorine is not that good a fit for pools. Secondly, choose the right model based on the pool's size and design. For instance, a larger pool may need multiple feeders and an above ground pool will need a different model.

On the safety front, be very careful when adding chemicals to the feeder, and remember that petroleum-based lubricants cannot be used on the cover. The system cannot be inserted ahead of the heater. It has to be placed before the pool inlet and after the heater and filter. Pools used by children should not have floating chlorinators.

Some models are automatic while others have manual dial control valves to adjust the feed flow. An automatic model is hassle-free, because it will test the water and automatically release more chlorine if needed. Regardless of the choice of model, the Hayward chlorinator is easy to use and simple to install, and can be setup even by a do-it-yourselfer.
