Lineup Overview For The 2012 Washington Nationals

By Jack Jones

If the Washington Nationals are ultimately going to contend in the National League East they are going to need gigantic things out of the lineup. Let's have a look at who is predicted to start and contribute in their batting order. Take a look at our 2012 MLB season predictions to see how we see the teams ending up.

Batting Order

Wilson Ramos (Catcher) - Coming of a nice newbie year, the 24-year-old came 4th in the National League Rookie of the Year voting. He batted .267 with 15 homers and 52 RBI in just 113 games last season.

Adam LaRoche (First Base) -LaRoche never actually got his year going as the vet dealt with a shoulder injury in spring training that finished his year in May. The Nationals are interrogating now if LaRoche has fully recovered from his injury, because when at full strength he's got the skill to hit 25 homers and drive in 85+RBI.

Ian Desmond (Shortstop) - The Nationals hope that Desmond is the answer on their search to find their leadoff hitter. As of now though, he's providing more question marks than answers. He hit just .253 with an on-base % of .298 last year. He did get better as the season went on, but he has a lot to prove if he wants to claim the leadoff spot for the Nationals.

Danny Espinosa (2nd Base) - Espinosa started off his rookie season with a bang when he had 16 homers before the All-Star break. He nevertheless ran into a problem when he finished the year with just a .239 average and 21 homers.

Ryan Zimmerman (3rd Base) - Zimmerman had his year cut short because of a torn abdominal muscle resulting in him playing just 101 games. He would go on to post career-lows in homers with 12 and RBI with 49. He hit 58 homers and drove in 191 runs in the prior 2 years so I predict him to bounce back enormous in 2012.

Michael Morse (Left Field) - Morse got better as the year wore on. He batted .289 with 15 homers and 41 RBI in 98 games in 2010. But in 2011, Morse did even better as he exploded for 31 homers with 95 RBI and an amazing .303 batting average. Now that Zimmerman is coming back healthy and batting ahead of him, expect Morse to copy those stats in 2012.

Roger Bernadina (Center Field) - Bernadina has the talent and potential to be a frequent player, but he has been struggling to put it all together. In 91 games last year he hit an underwhelming .243 with 7 home runs and 27 RBI. Washington added Mike Cameron as a safety net, but both might just ride the bench if the Nationals decide to bring up the 19-year-old phenom Bryce Harper.

Jayson Werth (Right Field) - Werth wants to work out the answer if he wants to stay in the Nationals rotation. After hitting .281 with 63 home runs and 184 RBI in 2 seasons with the Phillies, Werth disappointed hitting just .232 with 20 home runs and 58 RBI last year. He has proven that he will be able to provide big numbers, so there's great optimism in the Nationals staff that he'll figure in out in 2012.
