Online RPG and MMORPG Games Explained

By Thomas Barrett

Parents! Have you ever wondered what your children mean when they say "RPG" or "MMORPG"? If so, you are not alone. "RPG" and "MMORPG" are acronyms for some online games and this article will introduce you to them, so you can be more comfortable about this concept.

If you at least thought of the Internet when you first heard those unusual terms, you are on the right track. "MMORPG" and "RPG" stands for "massively multiple online role playing gaming" and "role playing games", which are just two aspects of worldwide gaming that involves thousands of players. Today's generation is fascinated with online gaming, which is an opportunity to play games over the Internet with hundreds of people at a time.

Available to anyone with a computer and Internet connection, online games are becoming extremely popular. There are thousands of games available for anyone to play. Fun and exciting, these games feature great graphics and lively music. Some of them are easy, others are very difficult. Some of them are totally free to play, others requires a registration fee. The best part is that you can play with people from all over the world. Some popular games have millions of registered users!

Basically, in a role playing game, the player assumes the role of a game character and work on building up an inventory of skills and weapons which can be accomplished only by spending a certain amount of time online. After acquiring the skills, the player can move on and play with other players worldwide. These role playing games can become extremely addictive and, depending on the complexity of the game, a person could spend up to several months at a game.

The role playing games require and encourage strategic thinking, but as parents, you may not be comfortable with the amount of time your children consume with playing these kinds of games.

My advice is to learn about these games right along with your child and make the decision to play them (or not play them) together.
