Learning Jiu Jitsu For Self Defense

By Sylvia Barrette

The martial art form, Jiu Jitsu began in Japan in 750 AD and developed into its present-day form by the 1600s. It included a lot of grappling and striking techniques and grew in popularity as soon as people were disallowed from carrying weapons. It was the best way a smaller individual was able to protect themselves from larger or stronger opponents. Eventually, this martial art style was being used by the police and the military.

You can actually spell the martial art form as Jiu Jitsu or jujitsu but they both still signify the practice of gentleness. In this art, you are able to conquer your adversary through leverage and proper timing. With several strikes once you have grabbed a hold of them, your opponent will be neutralized. Though you're going to learn useful methods to defend yourself, Jiu Jitsu will also teach you to be more focused and relaxed. Besides being focused and relaxed, you're going to also learn the importance of surrender, patience, efficiency and yielding. You'll find that many schools will teach particular facets of Jiu Jitsu in depth like certain spiritual or philosophical principles, healing methods like massages or using some types of weapons.

Other types of martial arts, such as Judo and others, come from Jiu Jitsu. Even though it has been compared to freestyle wrestling, Judo features a lot of the techniques found in Jiu Jitsu. Its focus is on maneuvers of self defense, where you throw your enemy off balance just before performing a throw. Yet another martial art form that came from Jiu Jitsu is Aikido and its primary approach is to redirect the energy that's coming form an attacking opponent using hand techniques. Once you can neutralize the foe on the ground, you can either have them give up or you can use other strategies to make them unconscious.

There aren't any tournaments in Jiu Jitsu, like there are in karate or tae kwon do, as it's not a sport. There's a sport known as Brazilian Jiu Jitsu but that is derived from Judo. You'll find big tournaments hosted by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation. Jiu Jitsu is a style that is very old, but many of its techniques can be seen in other fighting styles. It is utilized by many fighters in mixed martial arts competitions, like the Ultimate Fighting Championship, which has become popular since the early 1990s, when it was first introduced. The four time champion, Royce Gracie utilized a lot of the Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tactics to win the championships.

Several self defense classes teach Jiu Jitsu since anybody can learn it. You will know when you must defend yourself or when you must run away to get help. Once you decide this is what you want to master, you will just need to locate a gym where they teach it.
