Top Camping Tips Direct From The Pros

By Dorsey T. Emanus

Whether your camping trip will be brief or long, there are always things you should keep in mind for your trip. Too many people go camping without reading up a little on it first. This article will discuss information and tips that you should need to know before you embark.

Do not venture away from your campsite when night is nearing. It is far too easy to become lost when you do not know the area. It is all that much easier to get lost once it is dark. Stay at your site once the sun has gone down for your safety.

Get everything you need ready for your meals before you get to your campsite. If you are only camping for a few days, this initial trip to the store should be all that you need to do. Stock up on nonperishable items, too. You don't want you or your family members to be hungry on your trip.

To have a great camping trip with children, you should try to think of activities that will keep them entertained. You can play games, sing around the fire, swim, hike, canoe, go boating, go biking or even give them a camera to take photos. If your kids are entertained, they are more likely to enjoy the experience and want to go camping again.

If you are going camping with your pets or children, you need to take a few extra precautions. Try to teach your kids the basics of camping safety. They need to know what to do if they get lost and should each have a small survival kit. Make sure you have leashes for any pets and make sure they are current with all vaccinations.

Use an old shower curtain as a camping tarp. The next time you switch out your shower curtain, save the old one and you can use it when you go camping. Tarps, or old shower curtains can be used for many things. You can put it under your tent or use it to keep you dry should it rain.

When you pack up your camp site to go home, leave a few logs and some kindling for the next camping group that comes along. If you have ever arrived at your site after dark, you know how tough it can be to find firewood! It's a very nice pay-it-forward gesture that will probably help out more than you can imagine.

Take a first aid kit with you so you know that you can take care of any wounds that you get on the trip. You want to take every precaution necessary when you decide to go camping. So make sure that you bring a first aid kit with some bandaids just in case anyone gets scratched or hurt on your trip.

While camping, remember that your food is more likely to attract animals than anything else. Not only should you store your food in safe locations, but you should avoid dumping bacon grease, vegetable peelings or other food waste anywhere near your campsite. These morsels can not only attract raccoons, skunks and bears, but ants and bees, too.

Be mindful of the environment when you go camping. Whatever you carry into a campsite, make sure that you remove it when you leave. This will eliminate litter and protect the natural environment. Before leaving, the area you have inhabited should be as clean as you would want it if you were just arriving to camp there that day.

As you can see, there are plenty of things you need to remember for your next camping trip. Many things will play a factor in your safety and the overall enjoyment of the experience. Use what you have read from this article, and you will have a better camping experience next time you go outdoors!
