The Basics For Golf Courses In Houston Texas

By Marissa Potter

Before going out to enjoy a game on one of the many golf courses in Houston Texas, there are a few things to know. These tips are not just useful for those new to the game. They can also help out those moving from an area with fewer options and expectations when it comes to both players and clubs.

The entry point for many to the testing game that is golf is the local public course. It might be owned and operated by the city government, or part of a county or state park. While residents get lower fees, play is nearly always open to anyone. The other public option is through a resort. They mainly are there for hotel guests, but are more than happy to let others book tee-times. Resorts, however, are among the most expensive when it comes to greens-fees.

Offering memberships and also allowing random visitors to play are semi-private courses. With more expensive greens-fees than the local municipal option, they tend to attract more serious players. They also have to cater to members and their needs, often keeping one or several days a week exclusive to them. Military and university clubs usually fall under this category. Non-members may be limited in how many rounds they can play per month, to encourage them to join.

Most exclusive is the totally private club. Rather than just calling up and booking a tee-time, those who wish to play need to be invited by a member. Private clubs are often the most exclusive, often even more difficult to join as a member than play as a guest. These may have the nicest facilities, and often have picture-perfect greens. Unfortunately, most people will never see them.

The classic method of getting from hole to hole, carrying a bag of clubs over one shoulder while hunting for the ball, is allowed at most properties. Some, however, request that guests use a push cart or ride in a golf cart to speed play. Very fancy locations not only have caddies available, but insist that all golfers use one.

Wearing the right clothes is just as important as finding the correct club. Indeed, showing up out of dress code can see one denied play. For most courses that means a pair of actual golf shoes, comfortable cotton pants that are not jeans, a collared shirt with sleeves, a belt and some socks. Ladies are welcome to swap trousers for a skirt or Bermuda shorts, though the length is rarely flattering. Rare locations just ask that guests wear something on their feet and a shirt.

As for when to play, that depends on personal preference. The most comfortable time, weather-wise, is late autumn and early spring. The weather is warm enough for comfortable play, without being too hot. Those looking for the lowest prices might prefer the hottest afternoons in August, when many clubs offer reduced greens fees.

Golf courses in Houston Texas are as exclusive or relaxing as the people who use them. This information should help beginners find the right club. The one where they fit in, can afford to play and enjoy themselves and the game.
