Cycling In Michigan Is Good Outdoor Fun

By Allan Hatchell

Riding a bicycle has more benefits than simply not having to suffer through peak-hour pileups. It is great exercise, and promotes overall health and fitness. Cycling in Michigan has become increasingly popular, and there are hundreds of miles of bike paths to choose from. The beautiful scenery offers the lushness of the forests, the calm of numerous lakes and streams, and the natural beauty of gently sloping hills.

Michigan cycling events range from family rides by the lakeside to competitive adventure races. The weather is generally a bit on the cold side, so most events take place during the summer and autumn. In terms of accommodation, cyclists can choose to camp out near the trails or spend the night in lodges and inns.

The League of Michigan Bicyclists (LMB) and the Tri-County Bicycle Association (TCBA) host some of the most popular summer events. The LMB organizes the annual Pedal and Paddle Tour. Starting on Saturday, riders on the Hart-Montague trail try to cover between ten and fifty miles. They also canoe for some distance along the White River. This two-day event takes place early in the summer, and is usually well-supported.

The LMB offers other events that provide an opportunity to explore the beauty of this great state. The Sunrise Tour lasts for three days, and the Michigan's Upper Peninsula (MUP) Tour goes on for seven days. Both of these tours are enjoyable family activities.

The TCBA, as the state's largest biking club, organizes events for new and experienced riders. Their biggest tour last about five days, and takes place every year around Labor Day weekend. Is the DALMAC Tour. The ride covers a number of bike paths between Lansing and Mackinaw City. Some riders choose to cover an even greater distance. The funds raised are used to offset the cost of other statewide biking activities.

For those who are more ambitious about riding, there are cycling scholarships available. One of the most sought-after is the Iceman Scholarship. It is awarded to student athletes from the state who place well in the Iceman Cometh Challenge. Recipients of the scholarship also need to demonstrate their commitment to the sport, as well as strong character traits.

Each year, several charity tours are held all over the state. The number of participants in these rides keeps growing, as people come together for a worthy cause. Cycling in Michigan is more than just good outdoor enjoyment. It has something for just about everyone.
