The Five Major Yearly Sporting Events

By Paul Kent

Sure everybody knows that the Olympic Games and the FIFA World Cup are the 2 most important sporting events worldwide. The problem is, they only come around every 4 years. For us Sports nuts that's a long time between meals. The list below are the yearly sports events that fans around the world can set their calendar by.

Beyond their own country's borders, these events have gained a worldwide audience. They've been the topic of movies, books and legend. So here they are 'The Top 5 Annual Sports Events In The World ' otherwise known as "The Sports Bucket List":

Golf - US Masters

The original Masters event was held in 1934 remains steeped in tradition. The 'Green Jacket ', that is kept for a year before being returned afterward; the once a year winners lifetime invite to challenge at the Masters and the only one of the 4 majors to use the same course every year. With a setting like the Augusta National Golf Club in Augusta, Georgia like this why would you go anywhere else?

Tennis - Wimbledon

The name itself conjures up images of 'tennis-whites ', long shadows over well-cut lawns and a tumbler of Pimms in hand. 'The Championships, Wimbledon" to give it its official name, has been held at the All England Club in Wimbledon since 1877. It's the only one of the 4 Majors to still be played on grass. For the duration of the contest 'Radio Wimbledon ' is on-air and can be received within a 5-mile radius of AELTC.

Racing - 24 Hours of Le Mans (24 Heures du Mans)

Steve McQueen might have taken this race to a wider audience, but for racecar fanatics this is the one. The world's oldest active sports car race in endurance racing. First run in May 1923 through the public roads around Le Mans, the event now draws global marquee brands with Porsche winning a record 16 overall victories.

American Football - Super Bowl

A TV audience of over 100 million cannot just be tuning in for the commercials every year! This is the big one. It has even got its own name - "Super Bowl Sunday" But don't let yourself be confused, this sports occassion is not just a single day, it's the finale to weeks of parties and pre-game hype. Since 1967 this event has stopped a nation. The 2013 Super Bowl will be played for a record 7th time in the Louisiana/Mercedes-Benz Superdome. How would you like to get Super Bowl Tickets?

Football (Soccer) - UEFA Champions League Final

Since 2009 this has been the most observed annual single sporting match in the world with a TV audience higher than 109 million. Once in the Competition, the teams must compete with the best (and richest) football clubs in Europe. Stakes are significant. The winning team can reap over 50 million Euros. In addition national pride is at stake. Since the first match in 1956, Spanish, Italian and English clubs have claimed 37 victories between them.
