Be a Better Horse Rider by Following These Seven Suggestions

By Ruth Williams

Horse riding is a great hobby for all ages and it is never too late to learn. Building up a rapport with a horse is a great feeling. It is a great opportunity for experiencing something new and acquiring practical skills. If you're a real novice though, it can be difficult to know where to start. Here then, are 7 top horse riding tips for beginners:

1. Many people who haven't been in contact with a horse before won't know the best way to approach it. You should slowly approach the horse from the side, avoiding making any sudden movements. Horses are easily startled, so by slowly reaching out and patting it on its shoulder you will be able to reassure it that you mean no harm.

2. The key to riding correctly is to establish the ideal riding position. The foot should be placed in the stirrup with full weight being placed on the balls of your feet, keeping your heels down. Gripping the saddle with your knees and maintaining good posture will help you stay seated and feel secure.

3. For beginners especially, mounting and dismounting the horse can cause difficulty. Starting with a mounting block will enable you to get the hang of how to correctly get on and off without distressing it. When dismounting, make sure someone can hold the horse still to aid you. To dismount, you need to take your feet out of the stirrups and swing your right leg over the back of the horse, lowering yourself gently to the ground whilst holding onto the saddles and reigns.

4. Maintaining proper balance when riding is our next tip for beginners. It is something which needs to develop over time. Maintaining the correct posture will help you to move with the horse rather than getting left behind and not moving in unison.

5. One way also to improve balance is to look ahead and not downwards. You need to look where the horse is going and anticipate what how it may react. Being aware of any upcoming hazards will help you stay seated in case the horse spooks.

6. Controlling a horse comes with practice but you will need to know the basics first. This starts with holding the reigns correctly. Use both hands to hold the reigns. Keep your thumbs on top, and position them in between your little finger and third finger.

7. For your comfort and protection you should ensure that you are wearing the correct attire. You should wear a helmet at all time, professional riding boost with a small heel, jodhpurs, and a jacket. It is also recommended that you wear riding gloves to help you grip the reigns, even during hot weather. When riding on the roads, high visibility clothing will help motorists spot you and slow down in time.

Any new rider should take onboard the above tips before trying to progress further. It is best to seek the help of a professional trainer to ensure you get off to the best start and enjoy your new hobby. As fun and free as horse riding is, it is important that both you and the horse are safe at all times.
