Hints And Help On Bettering Your Mental Game Of Golf

By Tameka Mangini

To say that golf is a sport played in the head would be something of an understatement. There are few other sports which rely so much on the psychological skills of the player almost as much as the physical. Improving your mental game of golf is vital to making you a better all-round golfer.

A greatly enjoyable way of boosting your mental golfing abilities is to read as much as possible about the sport. There are a great many really excellent golfing books out there, and there is something to be learned from all of them. Reading and thinking about the sport will generate new insights and allow you to view your play from new perspectives.

Other great mental golf tips come from paying attention to what the top professionals say and do. Many top players go through some kind of psychological crisis in their careers, which often requires quite drastic psychological work; others merely need to tweak how they play on occasion. Listening to and reading interviews with players will often give you great insight into how they resolved any issues, offering you some good guidance for your own golfing career.

It also pays to widen your reading to cover other topics away from the sport. Reading books about strategy, psychology and even other sports can open up many new ways of thinking and provide strategic or tactical insight as well as some mental golf tips. Sun Tzu's classic text 'The Art of War' is particularly highly recommended.

Of course, it also pays to watch as much of the sport as you possibly can, and take a keen interest in how different players approach different match situations. You can sometimes pick up good tips for relaxing and staying focused from watching what the pros do. Seeing how top players respond to adversity on the course can also be very informative.

It is also important to discuss the sport as much as possible, especially matters relating to the psychology of the sport. More experienced players can help you directly with tips and hints of their own, but discussing the sport in general can also throw up some helpful new perspectives. The more thinking you do about the structures and tactics of the sport, the more you will improve.

These tips should help you to improve your mental game of golf. This improvement, in turn, should lead to some positive developments when it comes to your all-round ability to play the sport well. Read, think, discuss, practice and think some more, and you will soon see dramatic improvement.
