You may also struggle with the attacker, although your own martial arts classes won't prepare you for such situation.

Traditional martial arts training are more associated to sport than self-defense. They need a lot of practice, and also in a real street circumstance, you'll be lucky when they work. This means mastering the skills that go against much of what experienced MMA "athletes" and other martial arts trained individuals are learning. You need to do what they're not "allowed" to do! You see, there's a reason there are "rules" in even the most brutal cage matches. It's because certain strategies, whenever used, could cripple, blind, maim, or even kill an athlete on the ring. Not what you desire to do to a respected peer in the sport... but exactly what you may need to do in cases where several guy has his hand wrapped all around the throat while his buddy is coming at you with a baseball bat!

You have to learn gut-wrenching, brutal tactics that will test your own "mental fortitude" when it comes to how far you're willing to go to protect yourself. The defenses must be easy enough, yet deadly enough, to down the opponent and allow you enough time to get away. Such defenses could be learned at family home or in a gym together with you and a partner. You must learn exactly where to look for such fighting methods that educate you on street safety techniques.
