Three Tools That Will Make You More Secure

By Dustin Aaron

There are a ton of emergency situations that take place at night. It seems like the bad guys prefer to operate at night. People seem to be more vulnerable at night. This is why I always advise people to carry a good tactical flashlight.

The defining characteristic of any tactical flashlight is that it is small and can be easily concealed on your person. They are both smaller and brighter than normal flashlights. Most have a clip that can hook to your belt or your pocket. You should buy a tactical flashlight that has at least a 200 lumen beam.

Surefire is a tactical flashlight manufacturer that makes a 700 lumen flashlight called the Lawman and a 500 lumen flashlight called the fury. Both of these flashlights are high quality, high priced flashlights. On the other hand, you can easily find excellent 200 lumen flashlights at the local hardware store. A two hundred lumen light focused on an assailant's eyes will impair his vision for about 2 seconds. A light that is Five hundred or seven hundred lumen will blind him for up to three seconds. Two to three seconds is some quality escape and evasion time. Rehearse a scenario where you shine a beam directly onto an attacker's face, and then run for safety. You will likely give yourself at least 2 more life preserving seconds with this method.

It's also a great idea to buy an inexpensive pocket knife that is small and can be attached to your belt or hidden in your pocket. A good pocket knife can be used as a tool or a weapon of last resort. Under the best conditions, your pocket knife could notify your attacker that you are not an easy target and that he should move on to someone else. You're probably thinking that only backwoods red necks wear pocket knives, but I doubt that criminals are preying on these backwoods survivalist types.

A lot of people are not comfortable carrying a concealed handgun. You need a lot of training to competently shoot a pistol. However, you do not need much training to shine a flashlight into someone's eyes, and even less training to hit someone with pepper spray. There are tactical pepper spray classes that you can take to learn to competently use it in an emergency. If you are going to carry pepper spray, you need to take some of these classes at least once or twice a year.

All of these tools are only designed to help you either escape the threat or survive an emergency scenario. A firearm is designed to end the threat. These tools will only hinder or temporarily incapacitate the threat so that you can run away. Please keep this in mind if you decide to deploy any of these implements during an emergency.
