This is a natural and good desire and something that we'll address here. However, I'd first like to talk about the idea of defending yourself.
Can you really just defend yourself?
When we think about how to fight or self defense, we often bring to mind something like the Karate Kid. You wax on and wax off and brush away any attack. You punch or kick someone in the face so that they are too sad and humiliated to keep fighting. You walk away the hero and get the girl, and the bad guy has a bloody nose but is now your friend.
If you're a woman reading this, you might have a more serious situation in mind. You could be in an elevator when the bad guy in the corner suddenly pushes the stop button. You conjure up your best Charlie's Angels with a spinning back kick, sending your attacker into the wall and knocking him out. You make a quick 911 call and the cops are on their way to take this despicable person to the slammer.
This is what Hollywood wants us to think about. Could it happen? Maybe. Would it happen? Unlikely.
How to Fight For Real
Your high flying kick and smack with your nunchucks to the evil people in real life might make them upset. But, what if they then pull out a gun and are ready to fire? For the women, the guy who was following you and your kid in the park, maybe your attempted choke out didn't quite work. Now the guy has thrown you on the ground and is ready to take your child.
What is your next move?
At this point, it's come down to one question: you or him. One of you will go home alive and well tonight and the other will not. At this critical moment, you must have the ability to injure this person to the point that they can no longer attack you.
Be honest with yourself now. If you were to be approached tonight by someone who really wanted to end your life or force you, do you have the ability to hurt, maim, or even end the person's life if demanded by the situation?
Learning How to Fight Is Essential
It's an unfortunate reality that these are skills that we as responsible, good citizens should have to keep ourselves safe from those who would prey on us. We never want to use these skills, but we must have them to call upon when needed. For ourselves and for those we love.
The movies make it seem like these skills are exclusive to CIA operatives and ninja masters. However, there is a simple and effective way to put an attacker on the ground so they can't get up using movements that come very naturally, like walking, turning, and falling down. You don't need a black belt to keep yourself and your family safe.
So how does this work? You focus total body weight movements (like stomping, falling, and swiveling) on areas of the attacker that will leave him nonfunctional. How would it feel if you stomped on someone's groin? You get the picture. You just have to learn where to hit and put your body into it!
