Could Endurance Training Serve Mario Well?

By Rob Sutter

There are many video game characters that are skilled in running but Mario seems to stand as longest running marathon man of sorts. Ever since he came onto home consoles during the 80's, he became a strong figure and his iconic status has not wavered much, from what I've seen. He's an endearing figure to the public and people of all ages know who he is. Mario's an older character, though, which makes me believe that honing through endurance training can assist him.

Mario may not stand to be the quickest character in the world - others could make the claim just as much - but he's been the most consistent over the course of time. He's performed well when it comes to his games and there's not a truly bad one to point out. His legacy has been handled with care and I wish the same can be said for other characters in the gaming world. When you look at the entire body of work, Mario's is a tough one to match.

However, I'd be lying if I said that Mario hasn't slowed down over the course of time. Even looking at Mario himself, you can tell that he doesn't exactly possess the physique of someone who's in the condition to run. With a rotund stomach along with a short stature, he seems like he'd be more likely to be the water boy for a sports team than an actual competitor. It's clear that looks, in a number of cases, can be very much deceiving.

In order to help Mario as he has seemingly slowed down over time, maybe endurance training would be for the best. After all, if someone goes about rigorous activity constantly and keeps at it, it's possible that the results are going to be seen much sooner. Events like Spartan Race push these ideas of endurance, though, as you have to muscle through one obstacle after another. Considering how many hazards exist in video games, whether past or present, Mario seems like a strange yet ideal fit.

Turtles and lizards on their own do not seem terribly scary, do they? When it comes to Mario, though, it's almost like he sees the visions of his most hated enemies and incorporating such creatures to maneuver around could help immensely when it comes to endurance training. We all need motivation to exercise, I would believe, and this could be Mario's. While he has a storied legacy behind him, I don't think that it has to end so soon because of a lack of fitness.
