A Look At The Best Obstacle Course Races

By Lana Bray

Obstacle races act just like humans in that they have distinctive quirks and personalities people may favor or hate. It therefore makes sense that anyone planning to participate in them should choose a race fitting their fitness goals and temperament. Someone gets from any obstacle race what he or she puts into it. Whether one wants an athletic related challenge to find out what they are capable of, or a race just for fun, there are several of the best obstacle course races for them to choose.

The Civilian Military Combination race incorporates its military legacy much better than other races. It draws armed forces members together with civilians who want to find out if they got what it takes to participate in a military oriented competition. Prior to starting the barrier course, participants must successfully go through a pit. This is a challenge whereby competitors are judged according to the amount of reps they can perform in four lifting events being timed.

The Columbia muddy ride and run series race requires every participant to have a partner. Participants relay one another in running an obstacle course of 5 kilometers as well as riding a mountain bicycle. The two partners must cross the finishing line together, once they have waded through a 50 foot long mud pit.

Obstacles are designed in manner that will make them fun, not intimidating. All in all, if a contestant is intimidated by a particular barrier, all they have to do is simply avoid it as they will not be penalized. Participants are encouraged to wear costumes since the event is family-friendly.

Goruck is not much of a race but a challenge, as the organizers carefully stress. Groups of up to 30 participants each are made to run in various cities across the country. All must wear weighted rucksacks and are guided by a drill sergeant who tells them what to do to complete mental and physical feats. Often, some feats require individuals to set aside their egos for the teams sake. Despite physical stamina being definitely required, maybe the main aim of this event is to teach the participants how to work together so as to accomplish their goals.

A race that is somewhat a combination of fun and some stiff competition is the Rugged Maniac. A number of well constructed obstacles together with a varied terrain contribute to the overall race quality. Contestants can expect to compete with people who are serious about tackling the course and those who just want to have fun. The race is quite gender balanced since roughly half of the participants are female.

Run 4 Your Lives is an exceptional five kilometer race in which contestants should escape zombies prowling near each barrier attempting to steal their three flags. The contestant has to cross the finish line with at least one flag in order to be considered a non zombie and qualify to get a medal. The barriers and courses in each race location are closely guarded by organizers of the event. When a contestant skips an obstacle, they will not get a prize since they will be considered a zombie.

As much as it is among the best obstacle course races, the Spartan Beast is definitely for serious contestants only. It happens to be a grueling race covering more than 10 miles and one in which roughly 60% of those who start make it to the finish line.
