I have been doing a little bit of research on buying a dutch bike in Calgary. Their aren't that a lot of shops that possess a decent selection of Dutch Style bikes as the bigger shops either seem centered on road or mountain bikes. Not necessarily finding what I wanted at the bigger shops which I usually visit, I used google to start looking at the different brands and models out there.
My reason for buying a Dutch bike would be to simply have a decent bike to ride around town. Which is the real value with the Dutch bike from my perspective. The upright riding position, comfortable saddle and just relaxed style generally seems right for cruising over to the coffee shop.
The Bedford from Brooklyn cruiser is one of the first bikes that I really like. It is a single speed and I really think that is all that I need. I would never use it for any extended fitness riding and really only plan to pedal around town with it. To me that is the perfect point in having a Dutch bike, comfortable, upright and easy riding.
The Brooklyn Cruiser website rambles on about it being the perfect ride for all kinds of people. Perfectly suited for peddling around the bicycle paths, commuting to the office, delivering newspapers or more simple needs like mine. The perfect steed for a little free spirited cruising or just heading out to grab a coffee.
I have a few bikes in my collection, but none of them are anything like the Dutch style bike. Big easy to grab handlebars and a seat that any ones back side would love is what makes these the coolest bikes around.
The Linus website makes me feel like I am preparing on riding a Grande Tour in the Alps during the 40's or 50's when I dream about the other bike that I found. A beautiful Dutch Bike they call the Roadster Classic really is about the purest form I could imagine in a bicycle. It has a minimal look while maintaining all the comfortable geometry and handling I am looking for.
I don't think I would ever buy a bike without first riding it and I was stoked to come across the place to shop in Calgary for urban cycling gear while I was doing my research. While online research is great, nothing takes the place of a spin and the ability to touch and feel when it comes to a purchase like a bike. BikeBike in Calgary is a newer shop in the city and I couldn't believe their entire business was built around the commuter, Dutch bike lifestyle.
BikeBike is the place to go in Calgary for Dutch Bikes, Cargo bikes and, like I said, anything that you might need for commuting or recreational urban cycling. I recommend you check them out.
