Emergency Survival Kits Can Save Your Life

By Maryanne Goff

Being prepared for the unexpected, is something that many people are taught from the time that they can walk. Nothing in life, is ever predictable. One minute the sun may be out, and shining bright, while the next minute a storm might be brewing. It is the surprises in life that keep individuals intrigued. To ensure you are prepared for whatever surprises may come your way, it is important to consider having a few emergency survival kits on hand.

It is surprising in this day and age, when the weather behaves in an unpredictable manner, that everyone does not make it a point to own a kit that is packed with a few necessary items. When people expected the world to end in 2012, there were tons of people scouring to put a kit together that would help ensure their families safety. However, when the world did not end, people stopped planning for the worst, and started living in the moment.

Two places, where you will need them, are in your vehicle, as well as at your home. In fact, if you reside in a rugged area, it is actually mandatory that you have a kit with you at all times. You never know what you will run into, while you are traveling. Therefore, it is better to be safe, than sorry.

The size of a kit can vary. There are some that may be small enough to tuck into your pocket. For example, a small kit may contain a flashlight, a multi-functional tool, compass, lighter, and a whistle. You can carry these modest items around in your jacket pockets at all times. This way, if you do need any of the items, they will be at arms reach.

Most people believe that a survival kit should be fairly large. However, this is not always the case. As long as you have a few necessary items in your kit, it could fit into your pocket, if you want it to. The point of the kit, is that if it is needed, to help you survive, it will be there. A few items you will need in them are a compass, water, food, and a flashlight.

The kit that you travel with, will end up being smaller, than the ones that you keep at your residence. The kit that you use at your residence, is generally stationary. It will contain similar items that your travel kit has, but there will be more room for food and water, to be placed inside of it.

The basic rule of thumb to follow, when it comes to having a kit within your residence, is it should last for the span of three days, at least. Typically, if there is a disaster that occurs, having a kit that has enough food, water, and other items to last three days will suffice. If you are evacuated from your residence, you should take your kit with you.

A lot of modern day adults that reside in large cities do not feel that owning emergency survival kits are important. However, if something adverse were to happen, you would kick yourself, knowing that you could have prepared yourself for what was to come, if you had packed a kit, prior to the event happening. Life is unpredictable, preparing yourself for it, is key to survival.
