By Marissa Velazquez

Healthcare facilities are required to maintain high level of cleanliness of surfaces and equipments. The medical and surgical tools should be cleaned and sanitized with use of disinfectants to kills microbes. Workers who clean and sanitize these tools ought to have acquired the right training from sterile processing technician schools. These tools are reused in treatment of patients and should be cleaned properly to minimize cases of infections.

The tools can pose risks to both patients and workers. Proper training is needed to prepare candidates who aspire to take positions as sterilization technicians in hospitals, clinics, dental offices, or in laboratories. The sterile processing requires a high level of organization skills and attention to details. When the equipments are not cleaned or sterilized properly, they can trap debris of human tissues and blood traces, which could lead to serious infections.

Every surface and equipment in operating rooms should be treated with disinfectants and sterilized properly. When surgical equipments are used when they are improperly sanitized, they pose dangers to patients. Without proper cleaning and sterilizing, blood debris and tissues may remain on the surface of those equipments.

Besides the sterilization process, these workers are also mandated to keep records of the tools. Proper control of inventory is required to make sure hospitals do not run out of surgery tools and instruments. These technicians record all the stock of the equipments, store them in the right locations, and available them whenever they are needed. The workflow in operating rooms is determined by how the set up of instruments is done.

The technicians are required to clean, take stock, sterilize, pack, and prepare the tools when they are needed for use. In the operating rooms, these technicians organize the workflows by availing all the required accessories and surgery tools in time. Once the surgery procedures are over, these technicians pick the tools for cleaning and sanitization.

If during an operation, a cross contamination occurs, it can taint the image of a healthcare facility and degrade the reputation of workers. Legal suits may be placed for the mistakes committed in the process. These technicians are not only supposed to clean the tools but also keep inventories. They should keep records of the tools to make sure they are at par with the amounts required. Whenever the number of surgical equipments goes down, the technicians should order more to replace the worn out equipments.

Medical malpractices may occur when tools used in surgery procedures are not properly disinfected. Such lawsuits are very costly to bear and they taint the image of the healthcare facility and workers. The technicians also make sure that sterilizing chemicals are available for timely cleaning and sterilizations of equipment. These technicians help in promoting the safety of patients especially in operating rooms.

During surgeries, these technicians prepare the trays, arrange the surgery tools, and place them in proper locations. The students who train in this sterile process course should be able to have good organization skills and proper motor coordination. The sterile processing technician schools help in instilling the knowledge you need to work as a technician responsible for handling and cleaning surgical and medical equipments or tools in hospitals, healthcare facilities, laboratories, or clinics.
