Enjoying Table Tennis: A Few Advice For Newbies

Sports help keep our mind and body fit and healthy. It is a form of enjoyment which is not only fun but is at the same time beneficial to our body and health. Among all the sports that one can choose from, table tennis is one sport that will definitely get you hooked.

A game played by two to four people, table tennis is a sports activity that is believed to have started in the 1200s. History has it that army offices were the original players of table tennis. At that time, they used wine corks for balls and old cigar boxes for paddles. Come the late 1800s, the game became widely popular in England and was referred to as "wiff-waff". It was played by the wealthy people of said country as an after dinner entertainment. By 1927, table tennis has been recognized as a competitive sport. On the succeeding years, both equipment and the rules being followed in playing the game have changed tremendously. Today, table tennis is more popularly known as "Ping-Pong".

Table tennis is played on a table that measures 9 ft. by 5 ft. (2.74 m by 1.52 m) and stands 2.5 ft. (76 cm) from the floor. A dark in color, edged with white stripes, and halved longitudinally (for doubles play) by another white stripe net about 6 in. in height is used in table tennis to divide the surface of the table. Table tennis also uses a celluloid ball which is about 1.5 inch in diameter and is hallow and seamless. The paddles used in this game on the other hand are wooden with round blades about 6.5 inches long and are covered in rubber.

Table tennis is played by two to four opponents. The server of the ball needs to throw the ball in the air and hit it. The ball should then bounce once on both player's side and the player receiving the serve must then hit it back one bounce on their side and one bounce on the other side. Missing the ball once it bounces on your side means a point for the opponent. A match can be best of any number of odd games such as best of three, five, seven, etc. Each game is played until one player or team has scored 11 points with a margin of two points.

Various rules govern the playing of table tennis. The team or player who will start the table tennis game is often determined through a toss coin. The winner on the toss is given the option to serve, to receive, and which side of the table to use. Various violations may also lead to point deductions. Points are often deducted on a player or team if they touch the table or the net with their body or clothing, they let the ball bounce twice on their side, hit the ball twice in succession, or call a volley. A standard table tennis game should be completed in 10 minutes.

Table tennis is a sport activity that emphasizes endurance and keeps our reflexes sharp. It is a fun sport activity that is also helpful in promoting physical and mental fitness. It is a simple and easy to learn activity that will definitely be enjoyed by the whole family.
