By David E Paulson

In case you want a picnic table for a get together with your fiends or to delight your family members with a brand new feature you may do one of two things. If you do not wish to be troubled or you need one like yesterday, you would probably purchase it from your local retail store.

Then there are people who do it their way. You seem to be one of them. Else you would not read this article. You probably know how rewarding it can be to build your own table with or without benches.

If you build it yourself you would also get words of praise from family and friends. When you build it yourself you have a greater choice of designs, of the wood and the finish. Our final product could be such that it does discolor in the sun, or warp when it gets wet.

It is important to work according to a plan. No matter if you are a novice or carpentry pro. Avoid single plans. Look for sets of plans so that you have a choice sizes and designs.

Do not go for free plans Many people are tempted to settle for free plans but that is a bad start. Unless you get a free plan as a special offer when you buy set of plans.

When you start evaluating plans visualize the space you have for your table. Would a heavy table be more suitable than a light table?

You also need to consider the size of your family or the number of guests you wish to entertain. You might even consider one that you can fold up, or one you can take apart easily for better storage or easier transport.

When considering a design think about the ambiance of your picnic area. The table would lose its charm if it looks totally out place.

If you do not want a picnic table with benches, look for tables that have matching chairs. Once you finished your table you might feel like building a few picnic chairs as well.

Make sure that your final choice has the following: 1. A picture of the final product 2. A blueprint that you can read easily 3. A lumber cutting list 4. A list of sundry materials such bolts and screws 5. A list of tools and drill sizes 6. A video showing you how to work the lumber

Use good materials Print the list of materials and go to your hardware store and see what type of wood you can get. Do not comprise on the quality of the materials. Check out the store's material samples carefully before you decide on the type of wood. The most common types of wood for picnic tables are cedar, teak or oak. Also compare tool prices like that of a good circular saw.

Do you have all the tools like a good circular saw to do the job? Go through the tools list that your woodworking plans package provided to see if you got them all. If not, get advice and prices at your store. Do not buy any yet until you make some tool price comparisons.

The finishing touch Furniture for outdoors requires weather-resistant paint. Use a marine type varnish rather than a gloss paint that would later on crack d allanow water to penetrate. If your table is continually exposed to the weather apply a coat of varnish if the table looks weathered.
