Football in America

By Michael Jennings

The term "football" means different things to various people. In several countries around the globe, this term refers to a game played with a round ball which is kicked around the field. This game is called soccer in America. In America, "football" refers to American football, which is a sport played with an elongated ball, which, in most cases, is thrown by hand rather than kicked by foot. Go figure! American football (hereinafter just "football") is a sport played between two teams of eleven athletes.

The football field measures 120 yards by 53.3 yards with an end zone at each of end of it. The goal of football is to advance the ball into the opposing team's end zone. The ball is furthered either by running with it or by throwing it to a teammate.

While there is football in high school and college, professional football generates the most excitement amongst football fans. Professional football is governed by the National Football League. The National Football League is comprised of two conferences, the American Football Conference (AFC) and the National Football Conference (NFC).

Since 2002, the NFL follows this schedule annually: an exhibition season (also known as a preseason running from early August to early September and comprising of four games; a 16-game, 17-week regular season running from September to December or early January; and a 12-team single-elimination playoff beginning in January. The end of the season is the Super Bowl in early February.

During the payoffs, six teams from each of the NFL's two conferences play against each other to determine a champion for the NFC and one for the AFC. The NFC and AFC champions then play each other in the final extravaganza - the Superbowl. The Superbowl is one of the most popular events on TV in America.
