Various Kinds Of Modest Swimwear

By Allan Hatchell

A swimsuit, swimming costume, or bathing suit is an item of clothing worn by men, women and children while involved in water-based or outside activities. This may include swimming, water sports or sunbathing. Most of these garments are formfitting and reveal a lot. There are, however, options for individuals who would prefer modest swimwear.

Individuals who are interested in finding modest swimwear may want to engage in the same activities, but not have as much of their body exposed. This could be for personal or religious reasons. There are many different types of bathing suits for both males and females that fit these requests.

Some suits are made to be as tight as skin, others have a more loose fit. Lining is usually sewn into these garments as a way to keep the fabric from being too revealing and transparent when it gets wet. There are designs available that cover most of the body and some that expose most of it. Often, these suits cover the genital and private body parts. Those who engage in water sports or swim in cold water wear a dry suit or wetsuit to keep the body covered and help conserve body heat.

Choosing a suit that fits the standards and needs for modesty should not be a difficult task. In fact, most unisex styles cover most of the body, although they may be tight in their fit. Some examples: wetsuits, rash guards, dry suits and drag suits.

Female swimming costumes are often revealing, but there are options for those women who are not interested in showing of their body. One-piece styles, also referred to as maillot or tank suits, leaves the legs and arms out and the midsection covered. Tankini models keep the midsection covered too. In the burqini, much like a wetsuit, the body and head are covered and the face is not.

Most swimming costumes made for males do not offer any coverage of the upper body. If men are uncomfortable with this, an easy remedy is to wear a shirt. In terms of covering the lower body, trunk shorts are an ideal option. Though they still show some leg, they are usually loosely fit. Males may wear swim briefs with trunks for added modesty and comfort.

In most western cultures, swimsuits reveal the head, arms, shoulders and lower legs. In many cases, community standards and fashion impact the kind of swimwear that is most worn. Although there are some people with no interest for these social preferences, who want to wear modest swimwear. They may want to wear something not too revealing for various reasons, such as personal appearance insecurities or religious afflictions.
