The Various Types And Uses Of Fishing Lights

By Sharlene Fleming

Fishing lights are special devices that aid in fishing by attracting fish to a particular area where they then harvested. It is usually attached to a structure underwater or even above the water. Most fish usually converge in areas where their chances of getting food are high and this provides an opportunity for the fishermen to lure them to the baits. Most of the aquatic animals have eyes that are sensitive to green and blue colors which indicate the presence of nutrients in the water.

The best color of the light is blue or green although white and sodium vapor light can also be effective if their intensities are high enough. A perfect light should be submersible, have high intensity, should emit green or blue light because these are the colors similar to the space of the fish and the power source should be a portable electrical system. Fishing lights that are submersible prevent loss of light energy through reflection by the water surface.

A lot of energy is lost when using an above water device since a significant fraction of light is reflected by the water surface and therefore less attraction is done. There is no perfect device that has all the desirable characteristics and therefore consumers have to compromise some elements when making purchases. Some of those available use a lot of power and therefore last a few hours. Those that consume less electrical energy are however less bright and also not all of them can be submerged since electrical shocks might occur damaging them.

These devices are generally divided into two based on whether it is fixed permanently or whether it is portable. Each of them has its own pros and cons and therefore a selection is made depending on the situation at hand. The portable ones are usually powered by batteries, have low light intensity and because the batteries can only power them for a few hours these are not very reliable. Their market price varies depending on the intensity of the light emitted.

The permanent ones are generally powered with the normal house current of 115 volts. They are usually placed on poles at the end of the tier. These also vary in prices with the affordable ones that can be used for outdoor purposes being the fluorescent bulb, high pressure sodium vapor and the flood lights that use mercury vapor.

Permanent lights are powered with current of about 115 volts. They are usually located at the end of a dock on top of poles. This type is the best option where fishing is done every night since once they are detected fish comes on a regular basis at particular times. There are several types in the market like the fluorescent bulb, sodium vapor bulb and mercury vapor flood lights.

Those that can be submerged are more effective since most of the light emitted is utilized and very little is lost through reflection. Some modifications can be made on the existing types to make them more efficient. Several modifications can be made on the security lights to operate while submerged in water. A waterproof housing can be made to protect the bulbs from any damage. These adjustments should be made by professionals to avoid any accidents due to the high voltages involved.

The improvement in technology has led to more effective fishing lights being created which have additional features. The LEDs are durable, very bright and relatively cheap. Proper maintenance is required to optimally use these devices.
