If you've been to the golf course in the last few years, you're bound to notice something has really changed since the late 80's and early 90's. That's right! There are actually normal people on the green, playing golf, and having a blast! Golf is not the elitist sport played only by the wealthy and snobbish. It's now a pastime of the common man, who likes hitting the links and a bright Sunday afternoon, and who wears funny golf t-shirts instead of those embarrassing pastel collared shirts.
For years upon years as a shaved numbers off of my handicap and grew ever-more in love with the game of golf, I realized that I was really jealous of the private clubbers who got to play on immaculate courses that were tended by professionals every day. Even if I took off my funny golf t-shirts and put on their polo shirts, I would still never be welcomed in a place like that. This was definitely a case of the grass being greener on the other side...literally. What I didn't know until recently, is that I'm perfectly content with the courses available to me.
It's time to stop taking this whole game so seriously. Trust me, I may wear funny golf t-shirts to the course (and everywhere else), but I really do care about my handicap. I care about what score I get at the end of 18 holes. I still manage to have fun, though. Golf is a source of stress relief in my life, not a cause of it. I'm not shushing people who are talking during my swing, and if you find yourself being one of those people...then quit it! That's not how golf is supposed to be enjoyed, people! In fact, you will find no joy in anything if you approach it with such an angry attitude.
Now that a "lesser class" of people in funny golf t-shirts are playing the game more often, it would be good to note that there is nothing you can do to stop us from bringing beer. There are lots of courses that prohibit drinking, but few really enforce it. I like to be good and buzzed by the time I get to the back half, and there's no harm in it. I don't litter and I'm a courteous drunk who likes to laugh. There's no better way to play the game, in my opinion.
Even if a course has dress codes, you can still have a lot of fun with your funny golf t-shirts. Most courses only require that you not wear shorts or jeans. That leaves plenty of wiggle room for your funny golf t-shirts. Whatever you need to do, just make sure you have plenty of fun. If you're not having a great time, then you're not playing golf the right way. If you find yourself angry, unhappy, irate, or sad at a golf course...then you're probably playing at a country club without realizing it.
